What makes Classy D tick?

Prive_18DJ_classy_d~ Get to know a little about him ~

His BIG Birthday Bash is coming up and he's played at many of the hottest spots on the island as well as alongside St. Maarten's biggest DJs, so Out n' About set out to interview this awesome DJ!

How did you get your start in DJing?

Before I started DJing, I was a show host on Radio SXM back in '97. I then moved to Paris in '98 to do sound engineering school. That's when I learned about and started DJing house music with a couple of good friends. I landed some internships at major clubbing radio stations in Paris, such as FUN and NRJ, and had the opportunity to meet Bob Sinclar, David Guetta and Roger Sanchez at the very beginning of their careers. Not too long afterward, I was mixing in some famous clubs of the Paris night scene like the REX or GIBUS and the DUPLEIX back in early 2000. Back then, I was still playing on records and vinyl. Also meeting guys like the Daft Punk Martin Solveig; house music is one of my favourites – and the sub genres – but I'm very eclectic and love listening to jazz, funk, disco, anything old school. I was also a big metal fan and of rock in general; Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Blur, Metallica, Rage against the Machine. But hip hop was my first love and I still produce a few tracks and mix them often.

Why does the crowd keep coming back for more?

Why peeps come out to listen is because of the fact that I am open format, because I'm there to please, because of what I call sexy house music; deep house or lounge because I master the club style; commercial house or Electro Dance Music (EDM) while mixing in hip hop and all other club bangers in my style – sexy not brutal – not much cut and scratch because I'm an open guy and because I'm one of the few black DJs that really master house music on a whole, not just EDM.

Where have you played on SXM?

Well, there is not a club on island that I haven't played at: Tantra, Soggy Dollar Bar, The Alley, Impulz, Bikini Beach, Le Pearl, Sun Clubbers, Factory, Next Club, and my two residencies – PRIVÉ LOUNGE EVERY FRIDAY AND LE SHORE EVERY SATURDAY – and I'm extremely honoured and proud to be able to mix there. I've played in St. Barth at the Yacht Club, in Paris Le Madam, Le Gibus, Rex Club and Culture Hall.

What's DJ Classy D doing next?

Now the next step is more producing and releasing some major house and EDM tracks, mixing abroad in major house music cities such as Miami, London, Amsterdam, Copenhagen and Bombay. Also bringing the SXM way of partying to the world 'cause I believe we party like no one else; and by making them come to our beautiful island, we'll show them what we are about. Last year was one of my best years in DJing because I got the honour and privilege to mix with great peeps and DJs such as Lorenzo (Le Shore), Outkast (Le Pearl), DJ Ajay, DJ Merc and DJ Leo of the team E1 productions, thanks to the man Chet Euton and mad love to all of them Supayass Playere (Playere group). A plus was getting to manage and mentor a new-comer to my DJ roster – MR DJ Jestrel (new resident of Mooi restaurant) and my company CLUBROCKERS HD, of which I am the CEO. I learned a lot from all those guys, so now I'm truly ready to do more – and bigger –parties at different venues and to bring sexier, classier parties and music to everyone, bringing the groove back to music, and bringing down the house at all times.

Do you want to leave us with any words?

Two rules: never stop the party, and always stay classy!
